In 2020, the Rockhampton Harley Owners Group, known as Rocky HOG, established the Purple Rose Ride in response to the tragic death of Karen Gilliland, a beloved Rockhampton mother who was murdered by her estranged husband. Karen’s story deeply affected the local community and became a catalyst for action against domestic and family violence.
In honour of Karen and the countless others affected, the Rocky HOGGIES created this annual event to raise awareness, foster community solidarity, and provide tangible support to survivors. Held each May to coincide with Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, the ride underscores the importance of ongoing advocacy, support, and education.
The purple rose, the symbol of the ride, represents strength, resilience, and hope. It is a tribute to survivors and a reminder of the healing journey many undertake after escaping violence. Each year, the ride brings together motorcyclists from across Central Queensland in a powerful show of unity and compassion.
Since its inception, the Purple Rose Ride has grown into a significant regional movement. Participants and supporters come together each year to educate the public, raise funds, and engage the community. Funds raised go directly to local families affected by domestic and family violence, providing immediate access to essential items like clothing, fuel, meals, and phone credit, resources that may otherwise be limited due to coercive control.
This year, the ride supported Roseberry Queensland with a BBQ, fishing equipment, and a PlayStation gaming console, and provided cash and vouchers to the Rockhampton Women’s Shelter. These contributions make an immediate, meaningful difference in the lives of families rebuilding their lives.
Domestic and family violence remains a serious issue across Australia. Survivors often flee with nothing, relying on the strength of their community to start again. The Purple Rose Ride is more than just a ride; it is a movement for change. Every ride, donation, and conversation contributes to a safer, more compassionate community.
Funds raised directly benefit organisations providing:
Essential supplies for families starting over
Emergency accommodation
Counselling and legal support
The Purple Rose Ride is made possible thanks to generous support from local businesses and volunteers, including:
Rocky Harley Davidson
The Great Western Hotel
Hollywood Earthmoving
